Former curator of fishes at the Western Australian Museum; Conservation International science team leader (Southeast Asia); author and scientific writer. As of 2013, Dr. Allen had written 33 books and approximately 400 science papers, including the three-volume Reef Fishes of the East Indies (2012), which contains concise descriptions of each of the 2,631 currently known reef fish species from the East Indies. Dr. Allen and co-author Dr. Mark Erdmann discovered a new species of “walking” bamboo shark, Hemiscyllium halmahera, off the Maluku Islands, Indonesia.
