Physicist; designed a self-contained leather rebreather in 1680, believing that recirculating air through a copper tube cooled by surrounding water would allow impurities to condense; also proposed claw-like footwear to enable the diver to pull himself along the bottom with his feet. Despite the fact that the footwear is not designed for swimming, Borelli is credited by some to be the inventor of swim fins.
