Famed treasure hunter and discoverer of the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha on July 20, 1985; contents removed from the Atocha shipwreck were estimated at $450,000,000 USD, including 40 tons of gold and silver and approximately 114,000 Spanish silver coins, and many more valuables; discovered several more shipwrecks on the Florida coast; opened one of the first dive shops in California.
