Pioneer of diving in Nova Scotia; underwater photographer and videographer; artist; craftsman; explorer and historian; his cross-species friendship with a lone beluga whale in Chedabucto Bay, Nova Scotia, lasted several years and was the subject of a children’s book by Brian Skerry, A Whale on Her Own: The True Story of Wilma the Beluga Whale (2000); the defunct Nova Scotia Scuba Association paid tribute to Jim Johnson by creating the Spirit of the Sport Award in 2002: In Memory of Jim Johnson, Craftsman, Photographer, Explorer, Master Scuba Diver, Adventurer & Renaissance Man.
