LAMBERTSEN, Christian, M.D.

Scientist; designed a closed-circuit oxygen rebreather known as the Lambertsen Amphibious Respiratory Unit (LARU) for the U.S. Navy in 1939; coined the term SCUBA after changing the name of the LARU to Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus in 1952.
