Professor emeritus and pioneer in marine archaeology; author; directed the first complete archaeological excavation of an ancient wreck off Cape Gelidonya, Turkey (1960); founder of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology; ordered the construction of the first commercially built submersible in the USA, the Asherah, in 1964; known as the “Father of Underwater Archaeology.”
