Italian diving, freediving and underwater cinematography pioneer; author; set the first freediving world record at 98 ft (30 m) in 1949; developed the use of o-ring seals for waterproof housings in 1945; designed several diving suits and underwater flashes; discovered the sunken Roman town of Baia during an aerial reconnaissance flight in 1956.
