Co-developer of a self-contained breathing apparatus with Benoit Rouquayrol in 1864; created the Société française de pêche aux éponges pour la Méditerranée Orientale (French Society for Fish and Sponges Of The Eastern Mediterranean) based in Izmir, Turkey, in 1865; won the gold medal at the 1867 World’s Fair for the Rouquayrol-Denayrouze diving apparatus; Jules Verne chose the diving apparatus for the crew of the Nautilus in the 1869 novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea after attending the fair.
