[ 1535 ] Italian Guglielmo de Lorena successfully uses a diving bell equipped with a glass port to salvage Caligula’s imperial galleys in Lake Nemi. The two vessels built for the Roman emperor Caligula in the 1st century CE, are later recovered from the lake bed in 1929, but they are destroyed by fire during WWII in 1944.
