Orca (Orcinus orca) (a.k.a. killer whale) – 56 kph (35 mph), northeastern Pacific, 1957. The Dall’s porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli) has also been clocked at 56 kph (35 mph). In comparison, the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) can reach 60 kph (37 mph) while riding a ship’s bow wave and 45 kph (28 mph) in open water.
