Explorer; photographer; writer; filmmaker; pilot; pioneered many underwater colour photography techniques; saw his first coral reef during a dive off Antigua in 1941; discovered the remains of the HMS Bounty at Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific in 1957; discovered new species of sea flea parasiting lobsters (Dolobrotus mardeni); National Geographic Society resident shipwreck expert.
