Founder of the Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute on the French Mediterranean island of Embiez in 1966; founder of the Société Ricard, makers of the namesake Ricard anis and licorice-based appetizer (1932); environmentalist; created a fruit-based alcoholic substitute for gasoline for use by the French Resistance during WWII.
