The Arctic Ocean is the smallest of the world’s five oceans with a surface area of 14.056 million sq. km (5.427 million sq. mi.). It is also referred to as the Arctic Mediterranean Sea or the Arctic Sea by some oceanographers who regard it as a mediterranean sea (enclosed sea with limited exchange of water) or as an estuary (partially enclosed coastal body of water) of the Atlantic Ocean.
