Professor of physics; designer of the bathyscaphe Trieste with his son Jacques; designed a pressurized aluminum gondola for ballooning; reached the record altitude of 15,785 m (51,775 ft) with Paul Kipfer in 1931; he designed the bathyscaphe using the same buoyancy technique used in balloons.
