Sole owner of the wreck of the RMS Lusitania since 1982; dove the wreck at age 76 in 2004, setting a record for the oldest decompression diver; explored the wreck aboard a submersible; has financed several expeditions; twice ran for Congress; ran three times for the State Legislature (California). The government of Ireland declared the Lusitania a heritage site under the National Monuments Act in 1995, thus prohibiting Mr. Bemis from interfering with the wreck or its contents.
