Pioneer in diving safety; founder and former President and CEO of the Divers Alert Network from 1980 to 2003; founded the Pressure Physiology Group within the Defence and Civil Institute for Environmental Medicine (DCIEM) in Canada; first described high pressure nervous syndrome (HPNS); credited with the invention of trimix breathing gas; co-edited the The Physiology and Medicine of Diving with David Elliott (1969).
